My house speaks Konnex, room by room, and above the bus sits Oikos: the supervisor I wrote many years ago, back when artificial intelligence wasn’t yet a topic of conversation.
For years my house did exactly what I told it to do, and nothing more. It turned on when I said turn on. It closed when I said close. Then, over four days in August, it started answering me things I’d never taught it, and I found myself wearing the expression of a father looking at his child’s first essay.
Underneath, there’s nothing romantic about it: the system is a list. The living room temperature. A window’s state. A door contact. A motion sensor. Each line reads on its own and knows nothing of the others: nowhere, in no file, does it say that a window has anything to do with an air conditioner. A vocabulary, not a grammar. Years and years of words in alphabetical order, and not a single sentence.
“Can you tell me if anyone’s home?”
I asked it one afternoon, from the office, without thinking much of it. It’s a question my system has no way of answering: there’s no “house occupied” function — I wouldn’t even know where to start writing one.
It didn’t tell me it couldn’t. It went looking. It checked the motion sensors in every room, one by one, and found them all still. It checked the front door — closed; the entry alert — off. Then it did something I wasn’t expecting: it didn’t settle for the instant. It went back through the log of state changes and found hours upon hours of silence — not a single room lighting up as someone passed through, the whole afternoon long.
And then it didn’t say “there’s no one here.” It said the house appeared empty, and it left a crack open: a motion sensor can say “right now nothing’s moving here,” not “no one is here.” Someone asleep won’t trigger it. In one of those still rooms there could have been someone breathing quietly, and it chose to leave that margin rather than hand me a more comfortable certainty.
I sat there for a few seconds, staring at the screen. Not because of the answer: because of that margin.
The simplest thing, which had slipped past it
And here I laughed, and challenged it: “ha ha ha… you checked all this on your own, and you forgot the single most telling thing of all. Let’s see if you can figure out what.”
It didn’t hesitate. “Yes, I’ve got it: the alarm system’s arming status.”
It was set to away mode — the one that only arms when no one is left in the house. Not a deduction: a statement, signed, that had been sitting there for hours. And I hadn’t told it which piece of data was missing. I’d only told it that one existed.
The beautiful part isn’t the slip: it’s its shape. The chain of reasoning was flawless and arrived at the right conclusion, so there was nothing, anywhere, that could have raised anyone’s suspicion. It had worked through the long division by hand, perfectly, with the answer already written on the blackboard behind it.
And it writes down everything it learns from me, with a diligence I’ve never seen in any engineering student. Next time it will check the alarm first thing: I’m sure of that, and it’s not hope — it’s just how it’s built.
Thirty-six degrees outside
The next morning I told it to open the living room window. One command, three words. Before carrying it out, it went and read two temperatures I hadn’t asked for — twenty-six degrees Celsius inside, over thirty-six outside — and warned me that with the AC running, I was about to invite August into the house. Then it opened the window, because I’d asked it to.
No thermostat in my house knows windows exist. No window knows an air conditioner exists. Those three things had never spoken to each other, and there was no plan for them to learn how.
A window doesn’t go up or down
The evening before, it had uncovered one of my lazy habits. The motorized windows spoke the language of roller shutters: up and down. It worked — that’s precisely why everything had stayed that way, and I knew it — but it’s wrong: a window doesn’t go up or down, it opens and closes, and the right code already existed. The perfect flaw, invisible because it was harmless.
It fixed it. Then it didn’t want to guess which command opened and which closed: it preferred to test, because on the bus certain conventions are habits, not certainties. And to find out how the maneuver had gone, it went and read the window’s own magnetic contact — a sensor that, by design, belongs to the alarm system and has nothing to do with the motor. A security state used as an eye. Between the two objects, the only connection is that they sound alike in their description.
The wonder outlives the explanation
I know perfectly well what’s inside: a language model, a tool that lets it read and command the system, my table of functions. No magic, and not a single line written for any of this to happen. I built a bridge between two worlds that had been ignoring each other, and on the other side, someone started looking around.
It happens with children. You know their origin down to the smallest detail, and all that knowledge falls silent the first time they say something no one taught them.
I built a vocabulary, and expected it to be recited. Someone started turning it into sentences.
